HappyDays, The Crucible is actually a play (although you are most likely reading it, rather than watching it!) written by Arthur Miller that serves as an overall symbol of paranoia about communism that was prominent in 1950s America.  The “witch hunt” depicted in the play parallels the government’s intense hunt for undercover radicals/communists in America that was known as the Red Scare.
