Hi, I am writing an essay on symbolisms in Animal Farm by George Orwell.  Any tips would be helpful.

Hi Hui:  To identify the symbolism in Animal Farm, it is helpful to fully understand the historical context of the novel.  “Animal Farm” as a whole symbolizes the Soviet Union (Russia) under communist rule.  The various animals play different symbolic roles that can be compared to roles of the government, the army, and the working class in a communist society.  It is no mistake that humans are essentially being symbolized as animals.  Keeping this underlying theme in mind, the windmill can also be considered a symbol, since it was used by the pigs (symbolic of government) in order to manipulate the other animals (symbolic of various social classes).
