No Antagonist in Jane Eyre

In this novel, we do not see any antagonist. Though Jane encounters many such characters during the course of narrative, starting right from her cousin John and aunt, however not any particular antagonist. John distresses Jane in her childhood, but her aunt does not do anything to prevent him hurting Jane. Her aunt locks Jane into “the Red Room” where Jane is lead to believe some supernatural forces are attacking her. Later she entered into Lowood School, and there faced maltreatment by her caretakers and teachers. When she reaches her adulthood, Jane has faced already punishment and abusive behavior by many people. However, all these obstacles helped her to be a stronger woman.
