The action of the poem takes place around the time, when human history started. It begins after unsuccessful rebellion of Satan and making of this universe. Poet’s idea of cosmos is though strange, however, at the one end poet shows us Heaven and at the other end shows us Hell and between them is situated a place called Chaos. Milton sets first two books in Hell, whereas third and sixth in Heaven. He shows Hell as an uncomfortable and dark place, while Heaven as a peaceful and bright one. However, we find most part of the poem happening in heaven.
