The action of the novel sets in eighteenth century, however we do not find signs of historical background clearly. The main settings do not belong to a particular time period. We get the clue from the references made to real men like Admiral John Benbow and Admiral Edward Hawke, etc. This novel takes place in different settings that reflect different stages of plot development. Jim starts his journey from Bristol, then Admiral Benbow Inn, and then Skeleton Island. Jim calls this island as Treasure Island. These two contrasting names represent two sides of the adventure: treasure means, the island with huge potential of rewards towards the end and Skeleton means, everyone is at risk of facing death.
