“We always said that we would burn out our boats so we wouldn’t be tempted to sail right back when the going got tough”
Knowing that it’s the story of immigrants that comes to Canada and had to overcome tough times(there is no real boat in the story). Is it a symbol?

This is the use of an idiot” burn the boats” that means to forget the source of going back or forget that they can go back. It is associated with a Muslim general who landed on Gibraltar and burned his boats to bar his soldiers from retreating.
