The speaker in this poem is an experienced and wistful old man, who grown up before the year 1900, during which the world was facing a huge change. He has managed, however to live in US the way it was there one century ago. This mature man is a farmer, whose nights are agitated, as he constantly trying to understand those “considerations,” such as what could he defer a bit longer? What he needs to do tomorrow? These thoughts fill his head with these intense questions and therefore, he wishes to go back to his carefree days of boyhood.
Who is the Speaker in “Birches?”
