george eliot has chosen William Wordsworth’s excerpt in her novel “Adam Bede,” can you tell me what has she used it for?
Generally, Wordsworth’s poems celebrate simplicity and beauty often in a natural landscape location. Eliot like Wordsworth, would draw many metaphors from natural world. Both were also interested in portraying flawed characters with dignity and compassion. It was ambition of Wordsworth to convey “images of” ignored and lowly sketches of human society and it was something that Eliot had identified with fully, and something on which she focused her novel around. So, due to Wordsworth’s influence, she has taken this epigraph from his Book IV with the title, “The Church-Yard Among the Mountains.”
