They are a total of seven teenagers; they have left school, and they think that they are really enjoying life. Although the first two verses are from the poet, the next two are from the teenagers. They want to enjoy themselves, have left school land, and are quite late. Lear has beautifully inserted the voice of the teenagers with the first-person plural at the end of each verse, making it an enjambment. These verses add to the main idea of the poem, which is the rebellion against conventionality.

The teenagers continue counting their joys as if they are on spring break. They say that they stay late at night doing different things surreptitiously. To top it all, they drink cheap gin or wine as they adopt a different, unconventional lifestyle in June. This shows the transient nature of such a rebellious and anti-conventional life, which is the main idea of the poem.
