Examples of How to Write a Petition or an Appeal

Petition Letter is written to a person in authority or the head of an organization, requesting immediate action or a solution for a certain cause. The petition letter is similar to a persuasive letter written in a formal style. Petitions are considered as an earnest request to the appropriate authority or office. Sometimes a petition is signed by many people, asking to do something or change something on a larger scale. For instance, a petition can be an official letter to the court, asking for a legal case to be considered or a formal prayer or request to a priest or someone in authority or God.

The petition letter should be short, to the point, clear and logical. It should include a short headline title, concise statement, your name and address, and signatures of others who are sharing your petition. An online petition must consist of the starting and closing date of the petition. You can always change the closing date later if you need to. The right of petition grants peoples not only the freedom to stand up and speak out against the injustice they feel and also grants power to change the course. Some examples are given below:

To Vice-Chair of the Senate Committee On Undergraduate Education:

i am petitioning here for the retroactive withdrawal from the fall semester 2001 for some medical reasons. In the mid of the second semester, I was diagnosed with Mumps at the university health center. I tried to keep up my course at first, but the fever stopped me from doing so. Fortunately, my instructors were very understanding, and they helped me in the completion of work. They ignored my homework, as well. Later the doctor advised me that it is a viral disease, and the viruses act like hijackers. This can invade anyone in the class. He advised me to take rest and stay at home. Exams were going to start, and I was unable to prepare. Hence, I decided to withdraw, but the withdrawal date was passed.

I would appreciate it if the Faculty Senate would allow me to withdraw from this semester even though I had missed the withdrawal deadline. I have attached all medical documents from the health center and the advisory note from the doctor.

Thanks for your consideration.

Sincerely,

To Vice-Chair of the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Education.

i am petitioning for the re-registration of the fall semester 2011. At the end of the third semester, I met with a car accident and was admitted to a hospital because of my broken leg. After being discharged from the hospital, I needed to undergo physical therapy every day for twelve weeks. Hence, I was unable to attend my classes regularly. Unfortunately, I did not attend the entire fall 2011 semester, which affected my academic progress. I could not submit my project and take my final exams.

Now my leg has healed, and I can improve my course work and attend classes on a regular basis. I intend to register and repeat the semester studies in classes. I will follow the assignment planner and attend the workshop regarding this semester so that I can stay on track. I would be thankful if the Faculty Senate would allow me to be registered and appear in the mentioned semester.

Attached is documentation verifying my accident:

  • A note from the doctor shows that I was unable to walk and attend the classes, and the date when I was discharged from the hospital is also written.
  • A statement from my physical therapist, indicating my therapy schedule.

Thanks for your consideration.

Quality Analyst

Earnest Watson
Human Resources Manager

Dear Mr. Watson,

i am writing to you with great reluctance and a heavy heart. This petition is about our co-employee, Henry Chad, who is employed as a quality analyst in the Legal Service Department. He has been an employee in this company for about 3 three years. He is very irritating and over authoritative. Being a senior, he throws his workload on junior employees. Other employees and I have the same designation and pay scale. It is only on experience that he scores over us. But even that he has no authority to treat us like this. Daily, the other seven employees and I are constantly facing his irrational behavior. We are forced to do unpaid overtime as well. He doesn’t respect female employees and lacks work etiquette.

i am enclosing signed statement of affected employees for your reference:

I spoke to him many times, but his attitude was dismissive. Though he is a loyal employee of the company, this kind of behavior is unacceptable. Please consult him and find out if he has some personal issues. I am hopeful a prompt action would be taken; otherwise, it is hard for us to continue the job.

Yours sincerely,

Tom Shary

RE: The irritating behavior of a colleague

Dear Mr. John,

This is to bring in your kind attention that Mr. Jame’s continuous lame jokes about me are creating hindrances in my work performance. I had earlier tried to resolve the matter in peaceful terms, but unfortunately, things didn’t end up well.

Moreover, he started an abusive language, as well. I request you to take appropriate action and devise a solution. I am thanking you in anticipation.

Sincerely,

Linda Graham
